What Is Salisbury Steak?
It's not your ordinary steak; in fact, it's not even steak. Think seasoned hamburger patties transformed into steak-like shapes. But here's the twist: they're elevated to a whole new level when simmered in a rich, gravy and plated atop a mound of creamy mashed potatoes. No buns in sight, unlike your typical hamburger sandwich. This dish owes its origins to the innovative Dr. James Henry Salisbury, who introduced this hearty creation to Civil War soldiers.
Ingredients:
2 burger patties
1 tbsp butter
1/2 red onion sliced
1/4 - 1/2 tsp Cajun seasoning
1 can beef gravy
Method:
-
In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients (except the butter) until combined.
- Shape into two oval shape patties
-
In a large skillet, warm the butter over medium-high heat; add the steaks and cook, about 3 minutes per side until they get a nice crust.
- Remove the steaks reduce the heat to medium and in the same skillet add gravy
- Add the steaks back in cover and cook another 10 minutes until cooked through
Serving Suggestion:
Place these savory "steaks" on a comforting bed of creamy mashed potatoes or rice, then pour the delectable mushroom gravy atop them. Elevate the experience with a subtle addition of crispy jalapeños for that extra touch of texture and a hint of gentle spice. It's a harmonious blend of flavors and textures that's sure to satisfy your palate.
